Why Night dive ?

The underwater world changes completely when the sunlight disappears. The thought of night diving can bring anticipation even fear to some people and a question of why would you do that?

At first, yes, this can appear intimidating but what lies beneath is a magical unique experience that soon washes away any doubt and it becomes clear why night dives should be on your bucket list.

so .. why night dive then, what is all the fuss about? Read on and find out why we love night diving so much…

See true colours

When we day dive we lose colour. The deeper we go the more colour is lost, but with our night lights the colour is restored. You can dive the same site over and over in the day and have a truly different experience at night with just the colours alone. In Bouley bay we see deep purple and vibrant blue algae and bright anemones that on our day dive may not have been so vibrant.

Different species

The marine life that comes out to visit at night is different from those of the day. Lobsters start to make an appearance and all kinds of colourful shrimp, cuttlefish and flatfish and I have to mention my personal favourite night visitor... the squid who are attracted to the dive light.

Even the species we do recognise from our day dive will behave differently .. maybe the wrasse having a snooze on the reef in Bouley bay.  Or the elusive mandarin fish in the tropics that makes its spectacle, quick ( do not blink ) mating ritual just after sunset.

The Little cuttle.

Magical bioluminescence

An amazing experience is to sit and turn off the torches and experience the darkness with the glowing of tiny plankton all around you.

Peace and tranquillity

Night diving is about thrills and excitement but also brings a feeling of relaxed and blissful contentment as you dive into the stillness of the night. Not many people tend to be at the dive sites at night, just the divers, adding to that feeling of solitude.

Now we know why we should dive at night. Are we ready?
